Hassan, in the state of Karnataka, was the centre of the Hoysala Empire during 11th to 13th century AD. This was the era when the grand temples of Belur and Halebid took shape. Hassan was also significantly influenced by Jainism and thus, it became a known center of Jain literature later. Hassan was named after the Goddess Haasanamba. People flock here to explore Kannada culture and literature sprawling around and to witness its charismatic history in the form of various ancient structures and monuments dotted here.

Shravanabelagola

Shravanabelagola is a renowned attraction in Hassan where a 27-metre high statue of Lord Bahubali has been placed. It is known for being the tallest monolithic statue on the planet. Shravanabelagola conducts a special religious ceremony once every 12 years which is attended by streams of locals and travelers.


Belur

Another popular ancient religious wonder of the city is Belur on the banks of the Yagachi River. Here you will find exquisite temples including some famous ones like the Shennakeshava Temple. It is believed that the construction of this temple took more than 100 years. One can see intricate stone works on the temple walls underlining the skills and creativity of ancient artisans.

Kedareshwara Temple

Kedareshwara Temple of Hassan also catches the attention of vacationers with its ancient vibes. It was built by Hoysala King Veera Ballala II before 1219 A.D. The temple welcomes many nature devotees as well as the worshippers of Ishwara, a form of Lord Shiva.

Lakshmi Narasimha

he Lakshmi Narasimha temple of the city must also be visited by history lovers. The temple has been built in a typical 13th-century Hoysala architecture and flaunts three towers with fine sculptures decorating the walls.


Gorur

Gorur is another must explored attraction where one of the biggest reservoirs of Karnataka is located. Sitting at a height of 146 feet, this reservoir looks astonishing. Explore the area during monsoon season when it gets washed with rain water and looks greener.

Shettyhalli Church

Hassan also has a church named Shettyhalli Church. It stands on the banks of the River Hemavathi and was built in the 18th century. For most months, this church remains submerged in water which is a remarkable sight to witness. When the water recedes during winter months, the church became visible and can be explored.
